Renewal Scheme at Wyggesston Street, Burton-Upon-Trent
This project involved the replacement of 1400m old AC & CI water mains and installation of 150 new service transfers.
Specific challenges included:
• Negotiating two existing IP and HP gas mains running beneath the carriageway
• Managing a bus route and on-street parking
• Wyggeston is a short-cut route for traffic accessing nearby busy junctions
• Consideration of an electric sub station with HV/LV cables
Upfront liaison with Highways and locals was essential. Letters were sent out to all parties and a road closure was agreed.
Any work near the gas mains was subject to a watching brief from Cadent. With this in place excavations were carried out using our Vac Ex.
A slip line method was used on one side of the road and open cut to the other. Weekend working was agreed to complete the works within a minimal timeframe. The local doctors surgery and pharmacy water supply were kept operational by providing a temporary supply.
This was a very challenging scheme that overall has been deemed very successful considering the volume of properties and digging space available. High praise for the workforce has been received from various members of the public and local businesses.
