Project brief

South Staffordshire Water contracted us to complete a source of water connection for a strategic water main that Severn Trent had recently laid from their treatment works at Trimpley to South Staffs Water’s treatment works in Hampton Loade. The planned connection was from an existing 1200mm steel main connecting to a newly laid 500mm ductile iron main, with the installation of the required flow control valves, non-return valves and flowmeters.

Challenges and how we overcame them

Timescale was going to be one of the biggest challenges on this scheme as we were only awarded it in January 2025 with a required completion date of April 1st, 2025, to meet Severn Trent Waters regulatory target.

One of the showstoppers could have been the procurement of the 25 bar rated PN25 fittings required in this short timescale. With a combination of design rationalisation and close communication with our suppliers and Severn Trent, we were able to formulate a plan which allowed us to deliver the project on the required date.

As the existing main is a strategic main for South Staffs Water, a full connection utilising cut out was out of the question within the allocated time period. To overcome this a 1200mm x 500mm under pressure tee was installed on the host main and drilled to achieve the water companies preferred bore size.

Further necessary design changes were requested throughout the project which included the necessity for a significant thrust block and wall which were not included in the original design. Our programme was altered to accommodate the change and additional resource mobilised to form the thrust block while keeping to original planned work on course.

Further to this, in a change to the original plan we were requested to complete the final piece through connection to the Severn Trent main at the 11th hour.

Due to the alignment and levels of the existing and new mains this was a difficult piece through which would need a bespoke fitting. With only a 3 day window to complete we managed to measure, procure materials, fabricate onsite, send the fitting for coating and install on time to meet the deadline. With suppliers working through the weekend to help us achieve the goal.

Outcome to Date

The source of water connection was safely and successfully installed and connected to the new Severn Trent main to meet the regulatory goal and ensure water is now available to be transferred from Hampton Loade to Trimpley.
