Gravity/AGRATAS – 45MVA Scheme

Project brief

Doocey Group were awarded the contract from National Grid Electrical Distribution for the installation of two new 33kV circuits in previously installed 200mm Emtelle ducts. The total circuit length is approximately 7km and consists of two 33kV circuits (3 cable per circuit). Much of the works are in agricultural land as per drawings included in this tender.

The contractor is required to excavate, and reinstatement all excavations. The contractor must provide a full programme of works to allow NGED to programme their own resources as required. Doocey Group worked closely with NGED has an appointed Wayleave officer for this scheme who will confirm the access routes and conditions to each joint bay.

The energisation of these vital circuits will support Somerset is the future home of Agratas’ cutting-edge electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility in the UK. Situated on the Gravity Smart Campus near Bridgwater, this multi-billion-pound project will play a pivotal role in advancing green technology and sustainable energy.

It is set to become one of the largest battery manufacturing facilities in the UK, the site is expected to supply nearly half of the nation’s projected battery capacity for the automotive sector by the early 2030s. The facility will contribute significantly to the growth of the UK’s electric vehicle industry and support the shift toward a more sustainable future.

Industrialisation at the Somerset site is already underway, with construction progressing in phases. Battery production is scheduled to commence in 2026, marking a major milestone in the journey to clean energy solutions.

We are collaborating with local and regional partners, including Somerset Council, Bridgwater and Taunton College, and the Gravity Smart Campus, to deliver tailored education and training initiatives. This collaboration will create valuable opportunities for local people, supporting the community and fostering economic growth.

The Doocey Group were responsible for:

• Excavation of Joint Bays and Track

• Installation of HV Ducting

• Cable Laying

• Jointing

• Reinstatement

• Clear Site

• Program Management

• Engineering Solutions

Specific Engineering Difficulties

• Winter working with tough agricultural terrain – Doocey Group employed the use of Dura Base Matting.

Enhanced Site Safety and Stability

• They create a stable and safe working platform on uneven or unstable terrain.
• Their interlocking design distributes weight evenly, reducing ground pressure and preventing equipment from sinking.
• They minimise slips, trips, and falls, contributing to a safer work environment.

Cost Efficiency

• They reduce project costs by minimising the need for extensive ground preparation and remediation.
• They decrease equipment downtime and maintenance costs by providing a stable working surface.
• They are reusable, offering long-term cost savings compared to disposable alternatives.

Environmental Protection

• They minimise ground disturbance and soil compaction, protecting sensitive environments.
• Their non-permeable design prevents contamination and the spread of invasive species.
• They are made from recyclable materials, reducing environmental impact.

Durability and Longevity

They are made from high-density polyethylene, making them resistant to weather, chemicals, and wear.
• They have a long service life, providing a durable and reliable solution.

Improved Logistics and Handling

• They are lighter than traditional timber or steel mats, making them easier to transport and handle.
• Their design allows for efficient deployment and retrieval.

Versatility
• They can be used in a wide range of applications, including construction, oil and gas, utilities, and event management.
