Birmingham Children’s Hospital – 11kV Reinforcement Scheme

Project brief

Doocey Group were awarded the contract from National Grid Electrical Distribution for the excavation and installation of two new 11kV cable circuits from the Chester St Primary substation to a newly established substation at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and from Summer Lane Primary substation to a newly established substation at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

This project involves a 2.9km route traversing diverse terrains, demanding meticulous planning, execution, and adherence to safety regulations. To ensure that the hospital has business continuity the circuits were laid in two phases on either side of the route. The energisation of these vital circuits will support the new BCH wing and the MRI unit which will see the removal of the mobile unit from BCH and ensure more timely movements between wards and the scanners.

The Doocey Group were responsible for:

• Excavation of track

• Installation of HV ducting

• Cable Laying

• Reinstatement

• Clear Site

• Permitting & Notices

• Program Management

• Engineering Solutions

• Traffic Management

Specific engineering difficulties:

On Lister Street, Lower Loveday and Richard Street bridge crossings, the shallow deck of the bridge presented a significant engineering challenge. Doocey Group in agreement with NGED overcame and introduced a safe and permanent solution to all locations.
